Should work, we've all done it in the past.
Are the BIOS settings configured to boot from that DVD (or USB) drive
ahead of any built-in drives?

USB stick is the best way to do it - usually faster to write & read
from. A bit finicky to set up PXE (network) boot.

Can you explain how you created the disk?
Check the BIOS boot device order to ensure the DVD / USB are ahead of
the internal drive.
Maybe try "burning" the ISO source image to the USB and trying that if
the disk you already have can't be made to work.
