I do have one host that cannot run the Bareos daemon locally, and rsync 
consumes way too much memory and disk for it to run properly.

For that host, I actually use sshfs to mount the host's filesystem on a nicer 
machine, and run the backup agent on the nicer machine. You have to take care, 
though, to either remount or at least verify the ssh mount at the start of 
every backup job, in case the ssh connection dropped for whatever reason.
