Sorry if I'm pointing out the obvious here but why don't you connect the
existing Ethernet port of your laptop (Dell Latitude D830) to the Ethernet port
of your switch (HP 5820-24XG-SFP) ? I don't believe RS-232 is directly
compatible with Ethernet.
