[mdlug] Serial port use to connect to a network switch - Ubuntu 14.04

Most "managed" switches have a RS-232 serial console port for out-of-band
management:

Reconfiguring the switch can cause an Ethernet connection to be dropped.
An out-of-band connection doesn't have that problem.
