If Ubuntu installed on it before and now it doesn't finish booting
from the Ubuntu CD, then it sounds like a hardware issue.  Given that
Knoppix boots, my guess would be something with the Ubuntu CD, the
CD-ROM, or the combination.  But it could be anything: flaky RAM,
flaky capacitor, flaky connection, etc.

Two quick tests that can be done with the Ubuntu CD:
- test memory -- fourth option down from the boot menu
- check cd for defects -- third option down from the boot menu
