Which is totally reasonable for the average user population.  The
network I admin blocks IRC as 'evil' traffic.  Many IM (XMPP) servers,
such as OpenFire, provide IM gateways to IRC, ICQ, etc.... which
provides a safer way to provide users audited/logged/authenticated
access to legacy IM services.

Agree,  XMPP is great.
