I've actually had my workstation tagged as an infected system because
I left an IRC client logged into freenode overnight when they turned
on their "intelligent" firewall. Apparently ANY IRC traffic is
considered "botnet activity" by some security software.

Some rootkit checkers also give false positives if they detect open
connections to port 6667 (typical IRC server port). It's kinda sad.
I use IRC quite a bit for open source projects and chatting with
colleagues in different parts of the country, I hate that it's joined
SMTP as a protocol for nefarious use.

XMPP/Jabber can be used just like IRC, when chatrooms are set up. At
a past job, I set up an XMPP server for coworkers in different rooms
to be able to chat, and automatic notifications to be announced. You
can use it in almost the same way as IRC for private use.
