What I really miss is powwow.

Powwow was basically Unix/Linux talk (character by character,
rather than line-by-line, transmission) with split screen

my text
my text
my text
-------
your text
your text
your text

allowing simultaneous typing, but had the advantage that
unlike talk, it didn't require a talk deamon.

ICQ, Yahoo Messenger, AIM, etc are just glorified
versions of write(1) (which are "line at a time"
communications), only with network capability.

For those who want to see what I mean, login to root
on a virtual console (ctrl-alt-Fn for n=1,2,3...6),
then from any terminal (either another virtual console,
or a GUI terminal).

>From the non-root terminal,
$ write root
this is a test
^D ^D = ctrl-D

Then look at the virtual console where root
is logged in.
You'll see a message like this:

Message from akulkis at kulkilap on pts/24 at 12:56 ...
this is a test
EOF

Now in the terminal, type "write root" and a
message should pop up in the window were you
su'ed to root
