It's working.

I'm currently unsure why. However, the laptop is now connecting with WPA
authentication on the wireless router.

The only different thing that I did was boot the latop to the desktop
without plugging the laptop into the hardline. At the time, a friend had his
laptop plugged into my hardline to download a few updates to his laptop that
would have taken "days" on his dial-up.

I made no changes to the configuration, I had not had a chance to install
the supposed newer drivers either. (Installing that driver is why I had
booted up the laptop in the first place.)
