The first thing that comes to mind is DNS issues. Did he have static DNS
server addresses set on the router? My pppoe deamon get DNS dynamically
from ATT. Currently:
    search ameritech.net
    nameserver 68.94.156.1
    nameserver 68.94.157.1

It is the simplest to set your local systems to get their DNS from your
router.

The ppp deamon making the modem connection is probably getting proper DNS.
