The Discussion:
We warmed up talking about some of our favorite movies that just couldn’t be made today. Blazing Saddles by Mel Brooks is an excellent example of movie that would not be considered proper today, but was certainly able to deliver a few laughs.
Keith then gave us an informal tour of Zed, a new editor that uses AI to assist with the generation of documents. When writing code, it offers suggestions as you type, and it can insert corresponding characters or tags to ensure proper syntax. For fun, we had it generate an html5 document with various items such as a header, some AI generated text, a list, a table and a form to request more info. It was amazing to see how quickly Zed was able to create and update the page with a few very brief instructions.
We then diverted into a discussion about installing software from repos and other sources. Some projects provide a curl command which downloads a shell script. Others may use the repos provided by various distros or provide their own repos. In the case of Debian and its descendants , any custom repos would be found in /etc/apt/sources.list or in a file in /etc/apt/sources.list.d.
Richard The Tech Man (RTTM) sent an invitation to attendees to join the MDLUG Discord channel.
When asked about his colorful shell prompt, Keith credited starship. Their website includes this colorful and informative list of presets.
