2024-08-12 Meeting

The Discussion:

It was a perfect Saturday to have a slow, friendly chat about what we’re doing and reminiscing about northern Michigan.

We talked a bit about SEMCO, a local computer user group that primarily focuses on Windows.  They do have a Linux SIG, and they meet in person and on Zoom .

Carl suggested a future topic about a live demo of how to install and configure Ollama and Open-WebUI.  For now we’ll wait until we hear from other members who were not present.

Keith mentioned a project that involves LabVIEW, a graphical environment for processing data.  For example, it can be used to listen to a physical device and reveal frequency and harmonics data.

Then Keith mentioned that he was in Ludington enjoying the beautiful and relaxing day.  His description of the House of Flavors restaurant and their turkey dinner sounded amazing. We picked up on this and remembered times of being on the shores of Lake Michigan and cabins near the town of Remus.

Our special guests then arrived.  Carl started a chat session with Bender from Futurama and Flo from Mel’s Diner. This was an example of how llama3.2 can be used to emulate a personality.  We then had a mystery guest and asked questions to discover his identity.  It didn’t take long to discover that it was George Carlin using some of his real-life quotations.   Open-WebUI provided a web interface that made it easy to compare different Large Language Modules (LLMs) side by side.  We found llama3.2 was faster and more informative the llama3.1.  We also generated a simple bash script and a cron job, both of which worked on the first try.
