[mdlug] Vmware ESXi 6.x root password lost

Any one know of non-destructive way to change the root password on 
VMware ESXi 6.x all in one system? The past support person left and no 
ones knows the proper passwords.  Doing some google searches, I get 
conflicting ways to do it (from simple boot and set to single user mode 
and change, to reinstall the host system files).  Sadly machines running 
as guests have bad habits of taking long time to become stable after a 
reboot (I am talking hours before stable connections, very old systems 
and no one want to pay to update or move them), so its only gonna be a 
one time deal and want to do this when have the correct steps. Sadly I 
have no test hardware, or I would try all the ways I have found to find 
one that does work.
