Sorry, I forgot to mention (though rather obvious at this point) that
making the memtest boot drive DOES require another machine if yours
won't boot. I was assuming you had another machine to make it. If you
don't, maybe a friend or the public library may be able to help out with
this utility. The overall point being that if your machine can't/won't
even run that utility with a stripped down motherboard (but of course
including the memory), then perhaps there is something up with the
motherboard. I had a board go bad (BIOS corrupted) simply by not seating
the memory properly (though I swear I checked it three times) -- but
that was a really old board.

If you need to check memory, I have used a program called ^memtest86^ &
^memtest86+^ (^+^ is a branch of ^memtest86^, and is now handled by a
different organization). That program really saved me some headaches
involving constant but random crashing; and answered a lot of
questions! It does NOT require an OS to run -- just to make a bootable
drive, e.g. thumb drive. If you want/need to check it out first, just
google memtest86. You may also look them up on wikipedia. Check it out,
and let us know how it goes.
