I attempting to connect a laptop which has a serial port /dev/ttyS0 to a HP 5820-24XG-SFP switch. I can't get a connection. Tried many options.

An application, cutecom, looks like it would do the job but it won't respond.

I'm able to do the following command and not get an error: sudo ls > /dev/ttS0.

The command: "dmesg | grep tty" shows the port is active.

This is using a older laptop that I bought from Tony. It's a Dell D830.

I'm running Ubuntu 14.04.

I'm using a console cable (9 pin to RJ45).

I've been trying to use putty since I'm told that will work. Won't respond.
