That's great.  It's even a little better than the peiHalfTone result.

Does this involve manual input or can it be scripted with Scipt-fu
or something else?

I can't try this because I am using gimp-git which is the new
version based in BABL/GEGL and, I believe, will not take that
plug-in.  But I can try GMIC directly.
