Absolutely, yes.  If someone is *really* motivated and can self-educate
there are jobs; they just may need to look for them in less orthodox
places.

We have two guys with no "IT" creds in our IT department.  He has an
unglamorous job of supporting field techs; laptops, proprietary
software, etc...  Not glamorous, but it is an important [to us] and
*paying* job.  The other guy does PC support and got the job just by
working at the company forever.  He taught himself SQL, WSUS, editing
GPOs,  and some scripting.  It's a job.

And if someone can do those things without pestering me every fifteen
minutes they are employable.  I believe the same is true in many other
places.

The key is to network network network.  Teach youself stuff and meet
people.
