Seriously, though, the best way to get experience is through an internship or industry related project, preferably OSS with source hosted on GitHub.  The project should be something he is interested in and can speak passionately about.  He shouldn't expect to make any money from the project.

I was checking out at the Kroger self check out.  I talked to the employee who watches the check out lane.  He's taking computer classes and is looking for computer related work.  He has no professional computer skills.  Are there jobs out there for people who are just learning?
