Thanks. That worked. I installed 'pavucontrol'. The volume in pulse
audio control was set at a very low volume when I installed 'pulse audio'.

For some reason it only affected the 'flash player' plugin in Firefox
for some reason. It had no effect on the flash player plugin in Chrome
or other applications that were probably not using pulse audio.
Interestingly before installing pulse-audio, the plugin in Firefox was
working fine.
