a simple

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdX  bs=1M count=1

should do the trick.  

It will also get rid of the partition table and possibly the beginning of the first partition.  i.e.  VERY DESTRUCTIVE.  

but if you want a true “zero state” on the drive that is a good start.
