[mdlug] strange network issue

When this occurs if you do ifconfig with no arguments do you see the device?
If no when issueing ifconfig -a do you see the device?
If both thes is no run lspci and does the device show?
If the answer to #1 is yes no need for number 2&3 move on.
If the answer to #1 is no then answer to #2 is yes probably a driver issue.
If answer to #1&2 is no and #3 is yes could be driver or a bad card.
If answer to all three is no then bad card replace or add new card.
While this is occurring if answer to #1 is yes could be a bad cable or
network port on switch.
When this occurs use ethtool to check for an active link.
If shows no active link try new cable if still no link try new port if no
link then I am stumped put a new card in it and move on.
