[mdlug] Using old android phone a standalone GPS?

I've got an old Droid that I recently upgraded from. It's got hardware problems - the camera's shot, the headphone jack and the charging port are loose, etc. But it's basically operational. I'm looking at turning it into a standalone, offline car GPS unit. (It doesn't have a data plan anymore, so I'd have to load the map data onto an SD card.)

I've found a few things like Navit (http://wiki.navit-project.org/index.php/Android) but haven't had a chance to play with them yet. Anyone done anything like this? Any tips or gotchas I should be aware of?
