Asus RT-N16 router with Tomato firmware.

Has lots of memory for a router, two usb ports, one for your printer,
one for external hard drive.

Print server, media server, ftp server, samba, bla, bla, bla

You can also run Asterisk on it for a phone server as well as quite a
few other linux packages.

low power, no monitor, under a hundred bucks, will also offer Wireless
G/N, VPNs, and Quality of Service routing with a web GUI.

sell the old desktop to help pay for it.
