I also have never not been screwed by a Microsoft video update. 

Ray I would try a repair install on XP. If you do not know how google for "windows XP repair install" it is pretty straitforward and leaves all of your programs and settings in tact. You need an install disk with the service pack that you are using on it. If you need a service pack 3 install disk let me know, I have one.

Typically, with Nvidia drivers, you have to uninstall the existing drivers
before installing the latest set from Nvidia's website.

The Nvidia installer actually does this by itself now. It used to complain
and crap out after telling the user that the old drive must be removed
first.

Also, I don't trust Microsoft's driver installation utility/patch subsystem.
I won't ever use it to install any graphics drivers.
