Transient problem... 
I woudn't be surprised if it was exactly what Mike Rudas
said -- bad solder connection: current flows, heats part --
heating causes thermal expansion of part which in turn
causes the solder joint to separate, causing current to
stop, or become reduced to the point that the screen
stops displaying anything.

More specifically, my bet is that the joint in question
is on a conductive path which follows from the positive
side of the AC/DC converter to the power supply to either
the electron gun controllers (power pin on those amplifiers),
or to the heater at the base of the CRT. (being a tube, it
has a heater in it).
Worst case scenario: the heater itself is failing.
