[mdlug] ubuntu server 10.10 to 11.04 strange text video error

Ok back to my issue.. yep still broke.  as I said its a ubuntu server, 
not running X, a dell L700CXE (yes it old).  upgraded from 10.10 to 
11.04, if I do alt+F keys I do get different screes but its still white 
background with odd curly chars for the letters.  Standard ssh log in is 
fine, just if I use the vga plug (and yes the CRT is fine and word with 
machine before).  tried ctrl+c no effect
