I guess you've had bad luck.

SIIG cards have always worked for me, and when I
wanted more ethernet, the dirt-cheap 10/100 ethernet
cards (like $10) have always worked for me.

 Much better.  I'm back to not consulting hardware
lists any more.

even USB sound cards have worked w/o any  problem.

the only thing I stay away from is Canon, because
they absolutely refuse to even acknowledge e-mail
about Linux-related inquiries.  So screw them; I
now give all of my printer/scanner $$$ to Brother.
