[mdlug] Linux-friendly laptops

Hi John:

See my last post: dell.com/ubuntu and select the Studio 15. Looks quite nice. $594 default config. I'd recommend upgrading to the 6 or 9 cell battery, and selecting the WLED option, which brings you around $630. Nice!

Everything works out of the box, and it will work well with virtually all distros since all the HW is vetted for Ubuntu compatibility. When I got mine last year, I promptly did a clean install of the latest Kubuntu, and have had only minor hiccups since.

I only wish they'd bring back the higher resolution display option (which I got). However, you might be able to sweet talk a Dell rep into one. Thankfully, their support staff appear to once again be all US based.

Hope that helps. Cheers, Mike

When paying with your own money, in addition to a visit to Computer Direct, who would you recommend buying a laptop from, in order to get a reasonably priced (say $700 max), reasonably sturdy, linux-friendly laptop? I don't mind a Windows license with it so I can set it up dual boot, but I would much prefer XP without all the DRM, though. I'm thinking ahead for my daughter going to college next fall. (If it were for me, I'd also require the Ctrl key in the lower left corner, i.e. no Thinkpads).

Thanks!
