Good news - I got to open up the monitor (Compaq P1100) and solder in
the resistor over the long weekend, and it worked just fine. The
monitor's picture is *much* better. I ended up ordering from
www.circuitspecialists.com, as good as any other for price. (The cost
was almost entirely shipping, as expected.)
I made sure to show my boys what I was doing, though of course I told
them to stay back - CRT tubes can hold a helluva lotta charge for quite
a while after they've been turned off and unplugged. The old ones were
positively dangerous, though newer ones (this one was made in 1999) have
a circuit to drain off the excess charge.
