Has anyone had difficulties exporting diagrams from dia(1) to svg?

os: linux-2.4
distro: centos-release-5.2
exec: dia-0.96.1 (built June 2007)

UML state machine diagrams appear fine on the screen
and when exported to .png,
but when exported to .svg, the text is about 150% too large for
the boxes and sometimes overwritten.

The latest version (Dec 2008) requires loading and building
at least ~20 dependencies on CentOS-5.2.

Is there a repository likely to have more up to date dia?

Does anyone know whether or not the latest version corrects this problem?
