Good Morning All,
Finally, something I did worked the way I wanted it to and
more. This relates to the posts regarding the Verizon mobile
AP, the wifi enabled Blackberry, and my seeminly unending quest
for mobile email access.
I bought a Nokia E66 handset and activated it on AT&T's
network. In addition to the voice plan I got an unlimited
internet/text messaging option for $30/month. I believe
unlimited internet alone is $15/month. The handset was bought
online from Nokia and activated by calling AT&T. They sent me
the sim priority mail. From there plug and play. The handset
connect to the network immediately upon powering on. No
configuration. I connected my tablet via bluetooth and was on
the internet. Again no configuration. I downloaded and
installed Joikuspot Light <www.joiku.com> to the handset. All
was done automatically, no configuration. I started it and
voila, a truly mobile hotspot! I connected two different
notebooks and my tablet; one at a time; in succession. Since
the light; free; version only supports http and https, I
uninstalled the light version and installed the premium
version. So now; for about $30; I have a mobile hotspot that
supports pop and many other protocols as well.
I haven't played with it too much. I don't know how many
clients Joikuspot will handle. I don't now how fast the
network is, other than email downloads as quickly as ever and
the few sites I visited popped right up. I'd be happy to
bring it along for a meeting, as well as one of my Linksys
routers running the dd-wrt firmware. There didn't seem to be
much interest for the latter last time I posted, or I missed
the obvious.
In the process I found out that this handset has wifi, and voip
built in. I set that up as well but didn't play with it. The
voip client allready installed is Gizmo, which I had
previously set up. I was able to sign in easily with my
existing username. I haven't ever used Gizmo to any extent,
but I''m going to play with it. I'm in places somewhat
frequently that don't allow cell phones and/or have no cell
service, but have wifi. So I'll see. Of course international
call, etc are much cheaper this way. It's very well integrated
into the handsets UI as well. Everything seems to work very
well so far. Best of all; even after adding another cell plan;
I'm paying less money for more services after adjusting my
Verizon plan down.
FWIW
Best Regards,
