New (to Linux) users really shouldn't care, all that matters to them is that
"shit works" (as advertised). If things work, they shouldn't care if they
are using GNOME, KDE 4.x, XFCE4 (Which I personally really like) or any
other window manager.
In my opinion, your assertion that this is somehow a problem for new users
(to Linux) holds no water.
Aaron, you are a smart Linux User, if need be, you should be perfectly
capable of downloading the source to the last version of KDE 3.x and then
compile that specifically for your system, as well as configure and tweak it
to suit your tastes/needs. In the end, you should end up with a very fast,
personalized edition of KDE 3.x that you could easily port (via duping the
configuration files) to any future Linux install you sit at.
It shouldn't be signficantly more difficult than rolling your own Linux
Kernel used to be, before they came out with that extremely awesome GUI
based configuration system.
Regards,
Rob
