I generally agree, with the caveat that it is wise to use an external
power supply for disk drives whenever possible. With the USB adapter I
have all SATA and all laptop drives (i.e. everything except full sized
IDE drives) will pull power through the USB connection if you let it.
This is not necessarily enough power for the drive, and an undue strain
(current=heat) on the USB circuit. I had a name brand powered USB hub
die shortly after running a laptop drive that pulled it's power through
the USB.
To avoid this hazard I make it a practice to connect the USB last, and
disconnect it first, while supplying power to the drive with a dedicated
supply.
