You can't see the distinction between technologies like IRC and IM and
sites like Facebook & MySapce?

No I don't; and I don't believe they are. Any more than MSDN, the
Society of Manufacturing Engineers, or the BAR Association is "social
networking". By technical definition, maybe they are all "social
networking", but in the real world a definition that can't distinguish
between MySpace and Facebook and the aforementioned groups [and kinds of
groups: professional organizations, action groups, user groups] is just
silly.
And, of course, I have to point out that I said: "Most of..." and not
"All of..."
