Here is my advice, Register on the recruiting engines, www.Dice.com, www.Cybercoders.com and others. www.linkedin.com
1. Work on a challinging self start project, using a resource that you want to work in.(Find the skills that are needed or short supply)
2. Look at Education IT there is a huge void, NOTE: The education sector is very different than the private sector.
3. Take an IT class at a Community College, you might find a Unix/Linux admin class.
4. Network, this email is a good start.
5. Review your resume, make sure you have an alpha-bit soup section Have more than one resume, I have a long one and a short one
6. Ask your self, "Is this something a can look forward to everyday?'
7. Engineer your resume: Sometimes you may have to take a job that you are not really happy with but your hard work will make you shine, and the work is a good topic in an interview.
I'm in a narrow skill field the work brought me here from California because there was no one locally that could fill the need.
3 of the last 4 jobs I got was from a 10 min phone call. The point is that there are a hand full of areas that you can set your own terms:
1. Cutting edge
2. In a narrow specialized field (Education Admin systems)
Good Luck

Subject: [mdlug] job openings?
Gang, I am looking for a job. I have experience in several areas with my 12
IT career: Web programmer (Perl, PHP), Database designer, Web designer, some
Linux, analyst, architect, educator, evangelist, and small business owner.
I am not a *NIX guru, but am intelligent, hard working, have a lot of
initiative, naturally curious, and a quick study. Would ideally like a
position that takes advantage of my experience, leadership, and mix of
business and IT skills. If you know of an opening, please get in touch with
me.
Thanks,
- Andrew K
