The PS3 probably does support AVI files, however, AVI is just a  
"container" of video and audio data, and a mean to synchronize those  
data.

You need to know what audio and video codecs the PS3 support, not just  
the container.  My quick web search of the topic doesn't reveal  
anything but news articles published before the PS3 was released, so I  
don't think I can help there.
