PS3 supports divx/xvid avi files (with up to date firmware) or h264 mp4 files.
h264enc (http://h264enc.sourceforge.net/) has worked quite well for me. it
has a ps3 specific output profile that tweaks the encoder options for
compatibility. It's a shell script that uses mencoder to do the work and one
of the steps in operation asks if you want to do dump the commands it's going
to run to a file so you could pull the mencoder string you want from this.
