I can't remember the guy's name, but I helped get X on Kubuntu working
on his Dell Latitude c600. I didn't think to check then but the ATI
Rage Mobility M3 was older and more limited than I realized. It only
has acceleration in 16-bit graphics depths, similar to other old video
chips at the time like Matrox and 3Dfx. This doesn't explain why the
graphics was messed up at 24-bit but others have reported the problem
here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=828588&page=2
A sample config is here:
http://radagast.bglug.ca/laptop/ubuntu_on_latitude_c600.html
The important setting is "DefaultDepth 16" in the Screen section. It
can be edited from a terminal using "mc", browsing to /etc/X11 and
editing the xorg.conf file with the F4 key. It can also be edited via
"sudo kate /etc/X11/xorg.conf" from within KDE, followed by a relogin.
This should correct the "split screen" problem and speed up the
desktop. The penalty will be a reduction in visual quality of videos.
