There are a few factors that are involved. The first thing, as others
have noted, is to make sure DMA is enabled on the drive. However,
there's something else that can be even more important.

A *lot* of CD drives don't give you the actual data off the CD; they do
a lot of processing and error-correcting behind the scenes. Normally
this stuff isn't very audible, but it can definitely degrade the sound
at times. The cheaper the drive, the more likely it is to give you
problems. There are software ways to deal with this, and get at the
*real* bits off the CD, but they're slower. I suspect that your Windows
tools aren't bothering with this, but the Linux tools are.

 When I rip songs, I use cdparanoia, a command-line tool like cdda2wav
that goes to quite a bit of trouble to get the real, pristine audio off
the CD. Then I use "lame --preset standard" to convert it to a VBR
(variable-bit-rate) MP3. If you're using FLAC, you *definitely* want to
use cdparanoia or something similar - if you're that worried about
quality, you should take the extra care.

Now, on the other hand, if quality *isn't* your paramount concern, but
speed is, then you can use Grip, and go to the "Config", "Rip" tab, and
check the boxes "Disable paranoia" and "Disable extra paranoia".
