I haven't found xmms in a CentOS repositories yet.
I have tried rhythmbox with the same results.
How can I change the stereo balance with KsCD?

I've looked at this page, since you pointed to it. Thank you.

CD-ROM Device: /dev/cdrom

CD-ROM Device/Select audio backend: alsa
CD-ROM Device/Select audio device: /dev/dsp

I've tried setting/resetting "Use direct digital playback"
with "CD-ROM Device" set to /dev/cdrom, /dev/hda, and several others.
/dev/cdrom and all others tried are symlinks to /dev/hda .
I've tried setting "Select audio device" to "/dev/dsp" and "".
/dev/dsp is used successfully with mplayer for stereo mp3 files,
and for mono mp3 files iff left and right are unbalanced.
I've tried setting "Select audio backend" to "alsa" and "arts".
alsa is configured for use with kde.
I've tried all combinations of the above.
Either there is no sound, though the play clock advances, or
the play clock does not advance and "CD-ROM read or access error (or no
audio disc in drive). Please make sure you have access permissions
to: /dev/cdrom".
I have tried running kscd as root and myself.
I have tried setting /dev/cdrom mode to brwxrwxrwx and brw------- .
There are no reports entered in /var/log/messages, during any of the
above. There are reports of successful authentication in /var/log/secure
when root privelege is used.
Still silently investigating,
