[mdlug] Verizon Cell Phone Internet Access

Carl and anyone else still wanting to know,
I've found that Verizon installs their own (crippled) handset
firmware onto every one they sell, except Blackberry. What this does is
makes the handset useless for anything more than calls, their ''Get It
Now'' internet, and bluetooth pairing with an earpiece. There are some
hacks out there to enable more features the handset supports, bluetooth
and otherwise. Another option is to find an Alltel rep that will
reflash the stock firmware. This will disable all Verizon specific
features like automatic contacts backup, any over the air
programming, updates, etc. An unlikely alternative is the crackberry.
Firmware is untouched by Verizon. It has a mini usb charging/data port.
For an additional $30/month I can get unlimited access to Verizon's
EVDO network to surf with anything I can hook up to it. I can also use
it for DUN. The best part for me is Blackberry now has a handset that's
nice and small! If there's interest I'll post how things work out.
YMMV

Best Regards,
