Okay, I'm not really sure how I did it but something happened. I was
not able to get a working DOS/Win boot disk to get MBRWiz working. I
found a bootable iso called "supergrubdisk" which promised to unhide any
hidden partitions. I'm not really sure it did that but I do think what
it did was to properly flag/label the partitions. Story of my life. All
of a sudden I'm booting off the hard disk into my last failed install. I
did also find a Parted Magic live cd that among other things had GParted
on it. With that I partitioned the disk according to what I wanted.
(/, /boot, /usr, swap, /var, /tmp, /opt and /home). So with the two of
them reformated and checked my hard disk, which according to fdisk still
has 5475 unallocated sectors. I do think Ray was right as well because
gparted reports 100GB/93.16GIB. It is now working, I must sort out the
vagaries of suspend and transfer most of my home directory and my dot
files. Sadly I don't know exactly what I did, but it started working
after I ran the supergrubdisk.
Thank you all for your help and advice.

Best Regards,
