I've always had networking for XP in VMware Player.  It's been quite a
while since I've had any problems with it.  Usually it's caused by
major network reconfiguration but you just have to run
/usr/bin/vmware-config-network.pl to fix it.  On my laptop I switch
between various networks all the time and don't have any problems
under Ubuntu.
