This is Windows hosting Windows, though. I have a separate physical Linux box.

I found a good reference on running Windows from a physical partition under
Linux:

 http://news.u32.net/articles/2006/07/18/running-vmware-on-a-physical-partition

However, before I could implement it, I discovered what was causing the problem
with VMWare. I have a Radeon 7000 in the Windows box, with dual-monitor support.
One video card, two monitors. I've run VMWare before, plenty of times, without
trouble, but I noticed when I was experimenting that if I started up VMWare and
locked the screen, it would run all night. As soon as I came in in the morning
and unlocked the screen, within a few minutes - bang. Dead box.

So I upgraded to the latest ATI drivers (had to install .NET for the config
utility, can you believe that?) and it's been running fine for about 40 hours
now. So it looks like I won't need to repartition and such now. At least, for
*this* problem.

 Sincerely,

"[T]he U.S. film industry, in the midst of the worst box-office slump in
20 years, looks for possible explanations as to why Americans are not
flocking to movie theaters. In a totally unrelated development, The
Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl opens nationwide, to be followed in
coming months by The Dukes of Hazzard and Deuce Bigalow, European Gigolo."
