About a year ago I tried to install Windows XP on an ECS board with out success with SATA.  Linux did not like it either.  Now I stay away from ECS and use MSI, Intel, and ASUS.  I even installed a CD/DVD SATA drive for Suse Linux.  I know ECS makes a lot of boards but I know I can count on MSI, Intel, and ASUS.

A couple weeks ago, Windows XP stopped booting on my downstairs machine,
hanging when trying to load "MUP.sys". Since I only use it for games, I
wasn't too worried. I tried reinstalling a few times, without success.

This weekend I finally got time to take the computer apart and reseat
all the cables. Unfortunately, after that the computer refused to POST.
After some experimentation, I've determined that I can't boot if
anything's plugged into any of the SATA ports on the motherboard. I took
out the SATA adapters from my IDE drives and have them hooked up to the
IDE controller, but that means that my DVD burner has no port to hook
to. Still, I'm at least operational with Linux. Windows won't boot at
all, now it blue-screens even if the SATA controller is disabled.

(BTW, it's a good thing Ubuntu sets up the fstab to mount partitions
based on UUID instead of physical partition name. My drives went from
sda and sdb to hda and hdb, but everything worked fine anyway.)

Anyway, I've started the warranty game, since I only bought the
motherboard in March. Microcenter.com sent me to ECS, and they are on
vacation until tomorrow. We'll see if they (as their warranty policy
seems to indicate) might try to send me back to Microcenter. :-/
