 If you can hook up some storage, you could use "dd" to take an image of
the partition as it exists now. That way, you can make copies and try a couple
different ways of recovering. The command would be like "dd if=/dev/[the device,
e.g. sdb5] of=[filename]".

 Also, it does you no good now, but in the future, a journaling filesystem like
ext3 or XFS or JFS handles these situations better. :-<
