Well, it turns out it wasn't the graphics that was the problem, but the monitor.
I've divested myself of all but one decent spare monitor, and for some reason
nobody could detect its specs, and the default guess is off. So you get a black
screen when it tries to do graphics.
Once I got old-school and edited the xorg.conf file with the right specs, all
was well. Or, almost all. No accelerated OpenGL, until I dropped the default
bit depth to 16 - the old i810s couldn't do OpenGL at any higher color setting.
In other news, the IDE-to-SATA adapters I ordered off eBay finally arrived from
Hong Kong. It took a bit of tweaking to get them working (and, uh, well, I may not
have actually plugged in all the power cords the first time...) but they're
working now and I have all the disk space I'll need for a while to come. :->
