I don't think one can reasonably recommend a GSM phone in the United
States;  coverage is going to be pretty bad even if you can find a
provider that will let you sign up the phone.

The OS of the phone/device really doesn't matter so much so long as it
supports SyncML;  I've actually had the best luck with syncing Windows
Mobile Pocket PC devices.
