As a reference, I believe Costco has the Vizio 42" GV42L for $1100. This
is a cheaper set than most, so if your friend wants to sell you a Sony,
obviously there needs to be a price adjustment. Of course, that is the
Brand-spanking-new price, so "used" would most likely be at least half
that, if not less. Your best bet is to check the classifieds for the
area and find something comparable to what they are offering.

Important information, missing:
1. Brand & model number (most of the rest can be determined from this).
2. Actual pixel resolution.
3. Is it 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio? You say "DVD"-- but that's TOTALLY
meaningless.
4. Age and hours of use on set.
5. Types and numbers of video inputs.
6. Type(s) of tuner(s).
ALL of these factors are VERY important when considering resale value.
