What software do people (dis)recommend for optical character recognition?

What features are commonly available?

What problems are normally encountered?
     How are they (re)solved?

Where can I learn more?


The features I suspect I need are
    o Convert an image of printed text into a text file.
    o Recognize lines of text that may wander due to slight rotation
      of the page and/or bending of the page.

Features I suspect I'd like are
    o Recognition of fonts and corresponding markup of the text file.


What concepts am I missing?
